The Capsicum frutescens species most likely originated in South or Central America. It seems to have spread very quickly throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of this area and the species still grows wild even today. Capsicum frutescens is currently only native to the majority of Central America and the Northern and Western South America regions. It is believed that C. frutescens is the direct ancestor to the C. chinense species.
